HBCUs & HEP

Welcome to Project Freedom

With support from Laughing Gull Foundation, Project Freedom seeks to increase the presence of Black and LatinX instructors inside correctional facility classrooms through supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as they design their higher education in prison programs. HBCUs, due to their long history of civic engagement and anti-racist activism, are uniquely suited to provide educational services to incarcerated individuals and, in fact, are poised to lead the field of higher education in prison through rigorous research, data-driven practice, and community service with an eye for equity. We plan to select ten HBCUs, from the south(east) and southwest, to be in our inaugural cohort and will open the application process on February 1, 2021.

Our Program

We will work closely with the inaugural cohort around the following pieces to successfully launching a sustainable HEP program:

Our Application Process

Beginning on February 1, 2021, we will open our online application process. We will consider the following criteria when reading an application:

01. Proximity to the correctional facility

What we know is that running new programs in facilities that are far from campuses and the faculty who would be teaching in them can present a unique strain early on.

02. Willingness to provide course releases for faculty who wish to teach in the program

03. Willingness and ability to provide a four-year credential/degree

While many higher education in prison programs offer two year credentials or certificates, we believe that HBCUs offering four year credentials from the beginning would set the tone for the rest of the discipline.

04. South/Southwest location

We absolutely believe that every incarcerated learner deserves access to higher education opportunities; we also recognize that through histories of racism and white supremacy, there are fewer higher education in prison programs in the south and southwest.

05. Demonstrated buy-in of senior leadership

Prospective schools that submit letters from their presidents and senior administrative councils will receive priority.

06. Willingness to simultaneously enroll DOC employees who have no postsecondary experience or exposure

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

07. Partnership with local, community-based education and re-entry programs

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
